Economic Security Playbook

Helping you connect families to economic security support for long-term stability

Screen for Economic Security Needs

Child welfare workers work with families and young people to identify and prioritize their economic security needs.

Refer to an Economic Resource Navigator

For economic security needs beyond their scope or expertise, child welfare workers identify and connect families with Economic Resource Navigators (ERNs) at their organizations or others who can offer parallel support.

3.

Provide Benefits and Resources Support

ERNs help families and young people identify, apply for, and access needed resources and support while also updating and coordinating with referring child welfare workers.

4.

Provide Post-Closure Support Pathways

ERNs provide final updates to child welfare workers in addition to assessing need and ability to provide ongoing support beyond an upcoming ACS case closure. They make further referrals to ERNs elsewhere to ensure ongoing support.

This site is part of Connecting Families to Economic Supports, a partnership between the NYC Administration for Children’s Services, the NYC Department of Social Services, the Public Policy Lab, and Chapin Hall. It is a multi-year collaborative initiative to develop a citywide structure to support the economic stability and upward mobility of families and young people in—or at-risk of entering—the child welfare and youth justice systems.
